Fool's Assassin Review

March 26, 2017

In celebration of Robin Hobb’s newest release this spring, Assassin’s Fate, I’ll be posting my reviews of the previous two novels in blog form.

Here is the first one Fool’s Assassin.

Once again Robin Hobb does not disappoint.

This is the type of book I love to read. It is not difficult, yet is not what I would call a "simple read." At times I was completely enthralled, unaware of what was going on in the real world around me; that was how absorbed I was in this tale. When I was not reading it, I wanted to be reading it. I savored every word, taking my time and never rushing through a paragraph. There are moments of joy, but remember as this is a tale of FitzChivalry those moments rarely last, moments of terror and moments of heartbreak.

If you're new to Robin Hobb, please don't pick up this book! Or, at least not yet. This is the 7th book in the FitzChivalry storyline, and one of the reasons why the payoff is so high is because of the decades worth of story, beautiful writing, and highly developed characters.

If you're a returning fan, read this immediately!

As a side note, any extra material you may read within this world, such as The Liveship Traders, will only enhance this experience, but the only trilogies necessary to understand are Farseer Trilogy and The Tawny Man trilogy.

I don't even want to say anything about the actual story, beyond I loved every second of it. At times, yes, you want to shake the characters. Tell them what they are doing wrong, and throttle anyone who makes Fitz's life miserable.

My only comment would be: Fitz has aged like a fine wine, and while still not perfect, he continues to learn and do what he thinks is right by not only his own moral guideposts but by those who care for him as well.

Again: Read this book!”
